Eminent characters from Signa
It is correct to remember some of the several characters that are from Signa:
- Boncompagno da Signa, was born in 1175, he taught Grammar and Rhetoric at the Bologna University. He wrote some important philosophical and philological writings. He died in Florence in 1240.
- In 1307 the Beata Giovanna died in Signa, after that she was claimed with "vox Populi", beata and patron; after six centuries, the inhabitants still love her. She is celebrated on Easter Monday with a historical procession with lavish customs and medieval clothing, promoted by the ancient Compagnia dei Bianchi (founded in 1384).
- Fra' Morando da Signa , teacher of theology of the Saint Agostine hermit friars, he died on 10th June 1387; he was confessor and testamentary performer of Giovanni Boccaccio.
- Don Carlo Michelagnoli , teacher of Gaetano and Bettino Ricasoli, member of the Florentine Georgofili Academy.
- Last but not least, the Gramatica sisters , that spent their life, in Signa, in "The Quarnarina" Villa, to have a rest themselves after their theatrical toils. They hosted Gabriele D’Annunzio. They are buried with their parents in the Town Cemetery of San Miniato a Signa.
