From "Signa Itinerario Storico Artistico"
Text by Andrea Baldinotti and Roberta Barsanti
The first document, where San Pietro a Lecore is mentioned, goes back to 866. In 964, it is cited again in some documents, related to the above mentioned donation made to the Florentine Chapter by the Bishop Rambaldo. San Pietro a Lecore was mentioned as a priory as early as the 15th century. It was owned by the Mazzinghi family, then by the Riccardi, subsequently by the Gran Duke of Tuscany and lastly by the Bishop of the Diocese. According to the report from the pastoral visit of Alessadro de’ Medici (1590), the church was under the patronage of two families: Pulci from Florence and Losi from Campi. The present aspect of the church of San Pietro, is due to the reconstruction (1921-1933) after the demolition operated in 1907 because of the crumbling structures.
On the right part of the wall near the main entrance we can see a “Madonna with Child” made of terracotta by Giovanna Manfredi Cavallucci: memory of the year of Mary 1987-1988. The choir area contains the canvas of the Enthroned Madonna between Saint Peter, San Francis, San Girolamo and San Macario, by the School of Florence, (17th century). On the left wall there is a chapel decorated with a small stone renaissance tabernacle. On a shelf, is a renaissance bust, made of majolica, representing Saint Peter. Moving ahead is a stone confessional dating 1669.
Above the wide altar, at the end of the nave, is an important altarpiece by Bemardo Daddi; representing the Enthroned Madonna
with Child (14th century) and it is framed by the Mysteries of the Rosary: a work by the School of Florence (17thcentury).
