The straw and weaving museum "Domenico Michelacci"
by Roberto Lunardi
The organization of a "museum" entirely dedicated to straw and weaving had been an initiative, promoted by some manufacturers, supported by the Gruppo Archeologico Signese and by the Comune di Signa.
Now it is going to become regional and national, and therefore an international centre of a very ancient art that has been extraordinarily lucky particularly since the mid 13th century until now.
The museum is, therefore a plan to recover a collective historical memory; it is going to become an excellent place for collections, studies and research, preservation and exhibitions of an extraordinary heritage that could be lost because of unawareness.
The concept of "museum", therefore, is broadened and updated, so that it can be considered a profitable centre of cultural promotion, being capable of persuading the development and stimulating the theoretical and applied research of artistic and industrial creativity.
The first cross-disciplinary equipe is articulated in five fundamental branches: anthropological, artistic, economical, social and technical material.
They started to look for the documentation and existing remains, through research raw materials, tools, machines and manufactured articles, documents, authorities and associations, patterns books, pictures and more concerning the tradition of the making of the straw and its business.
A film library will document the technologies of making and what will result useful from the pedagogical point of view.
